Ocoee Trip 2015
Submitted by Rod on May 5, 2016
Starting Out
Starting out on my Ocoee trip in the summer of 2015. I'm very excited, as I haven't ran the Ocoee for many years, and I'm traveling out there alone.
I have just purchased this pop-up camper and have only tried it out one on a local camping trip with my wife.
I'm on my way to the Ocoee River Rats campground. It's a good 14 hour drive. Kansas City is the Whitewater Center of the country. Only 14 hours any direction to find Whitewater LOL.
Well, I made it to the Ocoee River Rats campgrounds. Got my pop-up camper set up and my air conditioner and refrigerator actually works.
Ocoee River Rats Camp Site
I have stayed here at the Ocoee River Rats campground many times over the past few years. It's quiet and secluded, and has descent shower facilities with hot water (usually).
The electrical outlets for the campers are in dire need of repair. There's only a few that work properly and it's first come first serve on the campsites.
I met a small group of paddlers the first night at the campsite. They agreed to let me join them for a morning run down the Middle Ocoee. That night we launched a couple Chinese Lanterns. Very cool.
Made some coffee the next morning and geared up for our paddling trip down the Middle Ocoee. I don't think I needed much coffee because my adrenaline had me pretty wired up.
The other paddlers were all in big boats, river runners and creekers. I had my 47 gallon Dagger Kingpin 6.2. They wondered if I would be OK in such a small boat but that's all I ever paddle. It's my creeker LOL.
Took a few pictures at the Ocoee Putin before I put my phone away. It's really a beautiful area in the Ocoee River gorge. The Ocoee Dam always gets my heart pumping.
One of the guys ran Tablesaw first and the got out of his kayak to shoot some pictures of the rest of us. That's me running Tablesaw in my 47 gallon playboat. Pretty big water for an old man from the flatlands.
I made it down the entire run without flipping, except for a couple intentional warmup rolls at the beginning and cooldown rolls at the takeout. After spending another night at the campground, I will continue east to the USNWC Whitewater Park in Charlotte, NC where my daughter Megan will fly in to join me.
This will be our 2nd summer trip together to the USNWC. Megan got introduced to whitewater kayaking there the year before.
